2022 2nd generation Toyota GR86 & Subaru BRZ

In January 2012, Toyota and Subaru unveiled the GT86 (FR-S) and BRZ, the spiritual successors to the 86, using Subaru’s then newly developed rear-drive platform and horizontally opposed, self-priming engines, incorporating Toyota’s direct-injection technology.

The twins had an extremely low center of gravity and high handling fun and were dubbed the “Porsche with no cylinders” by enthusiasts, as well as being the first drift or manual entry model for many young people.

After nine years, the new generation of Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ models have been released and put online, and many of the previous generation’s bugs, such as straight-line acceleration but not the Miata, and the interior being too simple, have been fixed.

Compared with the previous generation, the 2.0L engine has been upgraded to a 2.4L engine. The new GR86 and BRZ are equipped with a new chassis and 18-inch tires, and their frames have been improved with a 50% increase in torsional rigidity compared to their predecessors. Extensive structural bonding makes the cockpit 60% more rigid. The body, roof panel, and hood are all made of aluminum.

This also allows for more rational weight distribution throughout the car. Compared with the previous generation, this time the GR86’s horizontally opposed self-priming engine mounts consist of a modified aluminum structure. The new structure also makes the GR86’s noise resistance significantly better. The front-rear drive structure also suits the needs of drift enthusiasts.

The intuitive feeling of the two new cars is the change brought by the engines to the driving. In addition to the horsepower, the lack of torque at 3000 to 4000 rpm of the old FA20 is perfectly fixed by the new FA24 engine, which provides a constant and abundant power from 3000 rpm until the fuel cut-off. the large duckbill rear wing of the GR86 together with the car’s rear-wheel arch design is full of muscular lines. This makes the overall look tenser.

The front of the new BRZ is still full of muscular lines, and the design of the raised wheel arches on both sides is perhaps a tribute to the Toyota 2000GT. The flat triangle headlights are very different from the previous rounded three-dimensional sense and even have a hint of sharpness.

The interior of the new BRZ/GR86 has a more sporty feel than its predecessor, with black and red colors on the seats, steering wheel, handbrake, gearshift, and doors. The 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The three buttons below the gears correspond to the three modes, Sport, Snow, and Track. As with the previous generation, all the usual buttons are within easy reach and remain practical.

The safety features of both the GR 86 and BRZ have also been improved compared to the previous generation. To enhance driving safety, the new GR86 and BRZ automatic models will be equipped with Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance system (named Active Safety Suite by Toyota), which provides more safety driving assistance functions such as collision warning, brake assist, adaptive cruise control, and straight-line assist correction through the front camera.

The 2022 Toyota GR86 comes standard with a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder, horizontally opposed, self-priming engine, a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, Michelin Primary HP 17-inch tires, Apple Carplay & Android Auto 6-channel audio, and 8-channel audio for Premium (+$4,100), Michelin Pilot 4 18-inch tires and 18-inch tires. Pilot 4 18″ tires and 18″ matte black alloy wheels, blind spot detection, adaptive Led headlights, Active Safety Suite (automatic only).

GR86/BRZ main parameters configuration:

Engine: 4-cylinder horizontally opposed self-priming engine, 228 hp
Transmission: 6-speed manual/automatic transmission
Body Structure: Coupe
Starting price: $27,700

2022 Subaru BRZ comes standard with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder horizontally opposed self-priming engine, 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic; Michelin Primacy HP 17-inch tires, Apple Carplay & Android Auto 6-channel audio. BRZ starts at $27,995.
