What types of dragons are there?

Single-line dragon

Kite

Compared to single-line kites, this type of dragon is somewhat more complex to use and is therefore ideal for advanced kites. Kites are available as two-, three-, and four-liners. The most widespread are two-liners. Three-piece kites are considered exotic. Since four-line models are even designed to fly backward, they are only suitable for experienced kite climbers. The design may differ depending on the model. In the simplest version, kites consist of a fabric sail attached to a plastic or wooden pole. The pilot and dragon are connected by the dragon cord. Kites are extremely manoeuvrable recreational sports equipment that can develop a rapid pace with ease.

Battle Dragons

The battle dragon, also called Rokkaku, finds its origin in Japan as early as the 17th century. Characteristic is its hexagonal shape and simple construction. A straight longitudinal rod forms the scaffolding of the dragon. The curved crossbar gives it its typical shape in the upper and lower third. Traditionally, battle kites are made of bamboo. Modern variants, on the other hand, rely on carbon fiber. The dragon lines are attached to a maximum of seven points of the scaffolding, but ultimately always end as a single line. Thus, the control of the dragon is always only via a leash. Depending on the model, the control is possible alone or only as a whole team. In addition to the hobby kite flying, competitions are also held with fighting kites. In addition, thanks to its high pulling force, this type of dragon can be used as a standing dragon or moved through the air equipped with a camera.

What to look for when flying a kite and why are high-voltage lines so dangerous?

As already mentioned in my article “Fun for young and old – a dragon that must be”, the optimal wind strength to successfully fly a kite is between 2 to 6 Bft. In order for children to be enthusiastic about a cause, a quick sense of achievement is crucial. As already mentioned, single-liners in particular are suitable as entry-level models. These cannot be steered, which makes it possible to deal with even small children from the age of three. To make it easier for children to handle, the first dragon should be made of light material. Small fringes or an additional extension help to gain a better grip on the wind. For slightly older children who already have plenty of experience in kite flying, the purchase of a kite may make sense. The first kite should be characterized by quiet flight characteristics with little pull and be made of a robust material.
